The B.O.M. has identified the following areas of school life as requiring special care, in order to prevent injury to members of the school community:
1. Activity outside the classroom.
2. Activity inside the classroom.
3. Hygiene.
4. Fire drill.
5. First Aid.
6. Emergency Closings

1. Activity outside the classroom:
Our school opens at 9.30a.m. and closes at 3.10.p.m.
First break 11.00a.m. -
Lunch break 12.30p.m. -
Junior and senior infants will go home at 2.10p.m.
No class will enter the building unless accompanied by a teacher.
Each teacher will throughout the day see her class to and from the classroom in single file and in a quiet and orderly manner.
Each teacher will supervise First & Lunch breaks on a rota basis.
Pupils are requested to behave in a orderly manner at all times in the school and school grounds.
Pupils are instructed to walk and never to run in the school building.
Rough play -
Cycling in the playground is strictly forbidden.
Glass bottles are not allowed for lunch-
Written permission from parents must be obtained if pupils are to be allowed out of school premises during school hours.
In all pupil activity, teachers will exercise prudent judgment on the level of safety required and bring to the notice of the Principal any matter requiring corrective action.
Children are prohibited from playing in the following areas:
(a)Toilets, cloakrooms, hall and corridor areas.
(b) Prefab, steps, railings.
All children must wear school uniform daily and when going on Education Trips
(unless otherwise specified).
2. Activity within the classroom:
Within the classroom and school building, teachers will be particularly vigilant with the following:
When pupils are using scissors, compasses, dividers, knitting and sewing needles or any other sharp implements.
Teachers will not request pupils to plug or unplug any electrical equipment, to make tea and/or coffee or carry out any activity involving boiling water.
Teachers will exercise caution when asking children for help in moving furniture.
3. Hygiene:
Hygiene is the concern of everyone in our school. Good hygiene practice is essential for the health and welfare of all in the school.
• It is important that parents check their child's head for head lice regularly. In the event of their child having head lice they will be encouraged to contact the school, so as other parents can be informed and can treat their children accordingly.
Teachers are requested to train their pupils in good hygiene practice. The staff is requested to be vigilant in this regard, and to bring to the notice of the Principal Teacher any concerns they may have in relation to this.
In the interest of hygiene and for good training habits, teachers are requested to see that pupils participate in keeping their belongings and leaving their room neat and tidy daily.
Litter or rubbish will not be allowed to accumulate.
Running water/hand basin/soap/towels are provided by the school.
Smoking is prohibited in the school and school yard. (The Tobacco Health and Protection Regulations 1990).
4. Fire Drill:
It is the policy of the B.O.M. to ensure that:
Fire Extinguishers are in working order.
Fire drills take place at least once a year.
All electrical equipment be unplugged or turned off outside school hours.
An assembly area is designated outside the building.
Fire Drill Procedure:
(a) All stand and walk quickly out of the classroom and out onto yard.
(b) Once assembled on yard, teacher checks that all children are present.
The following suggestions should be followed:
(a) Ensure that rubbish is removed regularly and stored outside in a suitable and secure container.
(b) Avoid placing materials close to light bulbs.
(c) Portable heaters, if they must be used, should be used as little as possible and place where they are not likely to be knocked over.
(d) Switch off all heaters other than storage heaters at night.
5. First Aid:
In the event of an accident it may be necessary to administer First Aid. Accidents of a serious nature will be referred to the principal, who in turn will contact parents as the need arises.
The incident book will be available for writing up incident reports.
Don’t move anybody with suspected broken bones.
Don’t give tablets to any child.
Don’t apply ointment to open cuts or wounds.
6. Emergency Closings:
Emergency Closings will only take place with the permission of the chairperson.
Lack of proper heating/water, heavy and prolonged snowfall would constitute closing.
Once in school the children remain until closing time.
Should conditions then warrant closure, a note/text message will be sent home.

It is expected that all pupils of Ballyhogue N.S. show courtesy and respect to:

• To treat with care all school property and that of other pupils.
• Follow the school rules and instructions of the staff while on school outings.
Follow all the safety rules layed out in relation to sporting events.
