Paired Reading
Paired reading is when an adult and child read aloud together the words of the book. If the child is finding reading difficult, paired reading is a good way to read at home.

Top Ten Tips for Parents/Guardians
Find a quiet comfortable place with no distractions. Turn off radios, televisions and mobile phones.
Show a positive attitude towards books and reading.
Read with your child everyday for a set length of time, about 10 minutes. Try and visit the local library together as often as possible.
Recognise and praise your child's efforts in reading.
Take an interest in various children's authors.
Encourage your child to read a wide range of material such as newspaers, magazines etc. Discuss the articles that have been read.
Encourage your child to read to younger brothers and sisters.
Allow your child to choose his/her own reading material. Find the right level book for your child. Use the five finger rule. There should be no more than five words that your child is unfamiliar with on a page.

Encourage your child to try and guess what is going to happen next.

How Paired Reading Works.
Look through the book that will be read and talk about it together.
You start reading. Ask your child to point at words as you read.
After a couple of pages ask your child to read aloud with you.
If your child makes a mistake, point at the word and say it correctly then read on together.
If your child feels confident he or she might like to do some reading on their own. Let your voice fade out so that only your child is reading.
If they hit a difficult part, start reading with them again.
