Safety Statement


The B.O.M. objective is to endeavour to provide a safe and healthy environment for its employees and their pupils.  To this end, it undertakes to take all practical steps.  Where a health or safety hazard is identified, it undertakes to remedy the situation as soon as it is practical.

Each teacher is responsible for safety in their own areas and for the implementation or relevant safety procedures.

Roisin Dawson is the safety representative.  It is her responsibility –
a) To ensure that the front door and school gate are kept clear and unobstructed.
b) That all complaints are brought to the attention of the B.O.M. and in emergency situations to ensure that remedial action is taken to resolve the problem.
c) To carry out a yearly safety audit-in consultation with the school caretaker, and to provide the first meeting of the B.O.M in the school year with a report of any faults found.
d) To record and to carry out an investigation into all accidents and dangerous occurrences – courses to be determined and remedial action where appropriated, to be recommended.

The  B.O.M. in consultation with the teaching staff has identified the following areas of school life and activity as requiring special care in order to prevent injury or damage to member of the school community:
1. Activity outside the classroom.
2. Activity inside the classroom.
3. Hygiene.
4. Fire drill.
5. First aid.

1. Activity outside the classroom:
Our school opens for school business at 9.30am and closes at 3.10pm
First break 11.00am – 11.10am
Lunch break 12.30pm – 1.00pm
Junior and senior infants will go home at 2.10pm
• No class will enter the building unless accompanied by a teacher.
• Each teacher will through the day see her class to and from the classroom in single file and in a quiet and orderly manner.
• Each teacher will supervise First & Lunch breaks on a rotary basis.  
• Pupils are requested to behave in a quiet and orderly manner at all times in the school and school grounds.
• Pupils are instructed to walk and never to run in the school building.
• Rough play-kicking, piggybacks’, birthday bumps, trains, ball games (unless for P.E.), jumping on steps are strictly forbidden.
• Cycling in the playground is strictly forbidden.
• Glass bottles are not allowed for lunch-time drinks.
• Written permission from parents must be obtained if pupils are to be allowed out of school premises during school hours.
• In all pupil activity, play and games of whatsoever kind, teachers will exercise prudent judgment on the level of safety required and bring to the notice of the Principal any matter requiring corrective action.
• Children are prohibited from playing in the following areas:
• Toilets, cloakrooms, hall and corridor areas.
• Prefab, steps railings.
• All children must wear school uniform to class daily and when going on Education Trips (unless otherwise specified).
• All children must give a written note to class teacher to explain:
- Brief absence
- Late for school
- Permission to leave school during school hours.
- Homework undone for a good reason.
- It not wearing uniform.
- Is unable temporarily or otherwise to partake in some school activity.
- No note – No exit

To show courtesy and respect to
- All teachers and other members of staff
- All visitors to the school
- All pupils.
To treat with care all school property and that of other pupils.
Supervision for swimming and school tours or any other curricular  activity
Helmets to be worn while hurling.

2.   Activity within the classroom:
Within the classroom and school building during normal school business, teachers will be particularly vigilant with the following:
• When pupils are using scissors, compass, dividers, knitting and sewing needles or any other sharp implements.
• Teachers will not request pupils to plug or unplug any electrical equipment, to make tea
and/or coffee or carry out any activity involving boiling water.
• Teachers will exercise caution when asking children for help in moving furniture.

3.  Hygiene:
Hygiene is the concern of everyone in our school.   Good hygiene practice is essential for the health and welfare of all in the school.   For this reason, any infringement of the Code of Conduct in this regard, will be viewed with particular seriousness.
• Smoking is prohibited in the school and school yard.   (The Tobacco Health and Protection Regulations 1990).
• Litter or rubbish will not be allowed to accumulate.
• Teachers are requested to train their pupils in good hygiene protection.   The staff, teaching and ancillary, is requested to be vigilant in this regard, and to bring to the notice of the Principal Teacher any corrective action which may be deemed necessary.
• Running water/hand basin/soap/towels are provided by the school.
• Water for drinking is available in the boys toilet.
• In the interest of hygiene and for good training habits, teachers are requested to see that pupils participate in chores and leave their room neat and tidy daily.


4.  Fire Drill:
It is the policy of the B.O.M.  to ensure that:
• Fire Extinguishers are in working order.
• Regular fire drills take place at least once a year.
• All electrical equipment be unplugged or turned off outside school hours.
• An assembly area is designated outside the building.

• Fire Drill Procedure:
(a)  All stand and walk quickly out of the classroom and out onto yard.
(b)  Once assembled on yard, teacher checks that all children are present.
• The following suggestions should be followed:
(a)  Ensure that rubbish is removed regularly and stored outside in a suitable and secure container.
(b)  Avoid placing materials close to light bulbs.
(c)   Portable heaters, if they must be used, should be used as little as possible and
place where they are not likely to be knocked over.
(d)  Switch off all heaters (including water heaters) other than storage heaters at nights.  



5.  First Aid:
In the event of an accident it may be necessary to administer First Aid.   Accidents of a serious nature will be referred to the principal, who in turn will contact parents as the needs arises.
• The accident book will be available for writing up accident reports.
• Don’t move anybody with suspected broken bones.
• Don’t give tablets to any child.
• Don’t apply ointment to open cuts or wounds.


6.  Emergency Closings:
Emergency Closings will only take place with the permission of the chairperson.
• Lack of proper heating/water, heavy and prolonged snowfall would constitute closing.
• Once in school the children remain until closing time.
• Should conditions then warrant closure, a note will be sent home.

This Safety Statement has been prepared on conditions existing in the premises of the school at the time writing.    It may be altered, revised or updated so as to comply with any changes of conditions.
